Set Induction

Weddings. A once in a life time moment. A long anticipated moment.

Which comes with commitment, responsibility, love and trust.

That was the main message that I wanted to convey through my set induction. I showed students a series of photos related to weddings. This is to activate their schemata on weddings that they might have seen or attended. Later I asked questions on how much are they willing to give to their partner and what do they expect from them.

My set induction may be something not done by my teachers in school but I am disappointed with my set induction as I could not think of any other better ideas to present my set induction. It was hte usual powerpoint with pictures and questioning.
Mr Harold gave a different and interesting example of set induction after the whole class finished the set induction. It was the teacher coming in and talking to himself to portray the idea of imaginery friend. Never have i thought of that.

Besides, I was also nervous during the presentation and that affected my voice projection. I did not discuss students' responses either. Therefore I felt that I have done badly for my set induction.

If I were to deliver the lesson again, I must do it differently. I know that the questions that I have asked are from Dr Edwin, now i feel embarassed to have used it. I would probably focused on characters instead. I would show pictures of a few characters and ask students to name their character traits. It is hope that this idea would be more different.

I'll have to start preparing for my pre and while reading activities. =)

  2. Dear Yvonne,

As your roommate, I've known how hard you have been thinking for your set induction and therefore; you need not be too disappointed about it. It may sound something usual for you or perhaps to some of us that you opt to use power point presentation for your set induction but what I think really matters is that the quality of your presentation. It is my honest opinion that you should actually look into this way by asking yourself that whether do you think you have delivered the message that you wanted to deliver across to your students' mind? Was your teaching practice effective? Do you think the students have understood what that was taught? Did they grasp what that you meant?

Honestly, for me, your presentation of the set induction in terms of your delivery of the message across to the students was good! So, when you had that, students had automatically developed their interest towards the lesson. They could clearly listen to your instructions and therefore; understood all that you have said to them.

Do not take it too hard on yourself that you have used a very lame way for your set induction. It will not appear to be lame when you could get them to interpret what that was showed in the pictures. It is like you had effectively utilised those pictures for that particular stage.

You were on the right track and once again do not be too hard on yourself in search for ideas as trying out something new at times may withstand you to a risk of failing to do what that you could easily do.

Hence, I believe you should not be too disappointed about not being creative enough or not being able to do something different as you have tried your level best and indeed you were successful in gaining everyone's attention and interest.

    Regards,
    Kalmeet K.
