Say No to Plastic Bag

'Say No to Plastic Bag' is a common slogan today.

At least one month is allocated to teach on the theme of environment in school. I give students passage on environment and always ask them what they can do to help the environment. 'Say No to Plastic Bag' is always one of their answers. However this teacher, Miss Yvonne have not walked the talk yet. I still bring my photocopied worksheets in plastic bags. Every time I go to the photocopy shop I get one plastic bag for my worksheets.

It is undeniable that plastic bag is something every household have and need to hold and store things. To me yes, it is a need. I need the plastic bag to throw my rubbish in!

Every time we go to the shopping mall, we ask for/ are given plastic bags to carry our things. Sometimes when I see pretty ones, I even ask more than one just for my own collection. Hehehe

However, ever since I got into school, I am always reminded to reduce using plastic bags. Every stage in lesson has 'say no to plastic bag'. My roommate even gave me a recycle bag to discourage me from taking plastic bags.

Today, there was a launching of Hutan Kita@School by Tun Jeanne Abdullah, the chairman of Landskap Malaysia. Again, the issue of the use of plastic bag is naturally discussed during the forum.

Plastic bags are harmful to the environment. It is not biodegradable and it was stay the same for many years to come. Plastic bags in the sea suffocates sea animals and some even eat them thinking that they are food. The average plastic bag is used for only 5 minutes, yet can take up to 1,000 years to break down in the environment.

Again and again I am reminded, I guess it is time to change my plastic bag habit. I won't stop using plastic bag, but I think I will limit it to taking plastic bags home for the rubbish plastic bag. I will also try to remember to bring a recycle bag when i go out.
